Rhode Island Hazardous & Medical Waste Registration

Unlike most states, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) requires both hazardous and medical waste generators to register for a generator identification number. This number will accompany all shipments of medical waste leaving your facility. It will also be listed on your medical waste transporters annual report to the RI DEM.

Medical waste may not be transported without a generator ID number. Any transporter that accepts your waste and transports it without the number is in violation of state law, placing their license in jeopardy and leaving you susceptible to serious penalties.

Down

Other RI Medical Waste Regulations

  • Regulated Medical Waste RMW includes cultures and stocks, pathological waste, human blood and bodily fluids, used and unused sharps, animal waste from research on pathogens, and isolation wastes.
  • Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals In addition to the federal list of hazardous wastes, Rhode Island considers some additional wastes hazardous ("Rhode Island Wastes"). These include pharmaceuticals with carcinogens at or above 0.1%, teratogens at or above 0.1% by weight, suspected carcinogens at or above 1% by weight, cytotoxic or antineoplastic chemotherapy agents, and any added mercury.
  • Hazardous Waste Generator Status A person who generates ANY hazardous waste, regardless of quantity is considered a Hazardous Waste Generator (waste generated by homeowners in private homes is exempt).
  • Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) Status CESQGs generate less than 220 lbs of hazardous waste per month and may accumulate up to 2,200 lbs for no more than 365 days.
  • Small Quantity Generator (SQG) Status SQGs generate between 220 and 2,200 lbs of hazardous waste per month and may accumulate up to 13,200 lbs for no more than 180 days.
  • Large Quantity Generator (LQG) Status LQGs generate more than 2,200 lbs of hazardous waste per month and may accumulate any quantity of waste on-site as long as it is shipped within 90 days.
